Yesterday was baby day at the studio. I had a newborn in the morning and a six month old in the evening. I can’t say what it is about newborn lips that I love so much and I don’t understand why I have a fascination with theirs and not adult lips. They are just soooo cute

a little vintage finish on the next one….

If you ask me, six moths old is the perfect baby age. Sitting up on their own, those chunky baby rolls, the gummy smiles. I was glad for a little reprieve from the heat yesterday. It was still quite a work out shooting outside, but I am looking forward to fall weather.

I bought myself a new camera in May. Without getting all techno geeky on you, I’ll say that I saw buying this camera as a downgrade from my main camera body. I bought it because it did ONE thing that the other camera did not – video. So over the past month and a half I’ve used it more and more and you know what… I may have viewed it as a downgrade but my feelings on it have definitely changed. This camera has CRAZY focus, great color out of the camera, and can pick up on some of the smallest details.

For example, Baby Maddox was here at the studio yesterday. Some of the detail may be lost in making this image suitable for the web. All the fuzzy details in the first photograph just blew me away, his hair, his faint eyelashes, his peach fuzz, the wrap.

He was truly soundly sleeping for this last photo. Love the way his tiny mouth and chin are so relaxed. He was dreaming with the angels.

Be Good!

After a week of what seemed full of big people photography (bridals, engagements and seniors) it was refreshing to get a brand new baby boy. Cohen came 4 weeks early. So technically one could argue that I photographed him at one day old. The truth is, this is a one month old that we got really lucky with. He still slept and curled up just the way I like it. Thank you little Cohen for staying little so your mommy could get the pictures she wanted. We all appreciate it!

I’ve learned a few things about photographing newborns over the years.

1. When you want a baby to sleep they are not going to. And once you give up and call it a day guess what they do?? They sleep.

2. Every newborn sleeps all day until they come to the studio. The day they arrive is the day they “wake up”

3. If dad is present for the session, he WILL get soiled. Especially if he has to go back to work… guaranteed accident.

4. There are no bad newborn sessions. Sometimes I have to work harder… but the end result is always blissfully sweet.

5. Patience… let me say it again. PATIENCE. It is why I schedule 2 hours for a newborn and leave extra time around the session in case it goes over. I expect it to be hard. I expect a baby to cry, have accidents, not sleep.

The reward is always finding that one… the one that makes me want to photograph the next one. The one that makes my heart smile. The one that speaks to me and reminds me that on that day, I held a little miracle and it breathed, cried, and for an instant slept just long enough for me to take two pictures. And every single time – it is worth it.

Be Good!

In January I always find it interesting that I experience a little baby boom here at the studio. I get all the babies that were born over the holidays and couldn’t find the time to make it in before they were ten days old. Baby Sally is a month old and a little older than most of my newborns. She didn’t sleep while she was here, but we put her in the carrier and I walked her down to the Scrapbook Store with her mom and she fell asleep immediately – of course.

I wonder what she is thinking about??? Probably that it is too hot in the studio.

I do everything I can to keep the baby comfortable in the studio. I have many blankets, hats, and other baby things. But what makes a photograph special, what makes it personal is when you include your own things in the photo. His mom brought the snoopy collection and no one is going to have a pictures just like his.

I had a session today with an 11 day newborn girl, baby Olivia. Olivia came with an entourage, Grandparents, parents and Big Brother Noah. A multi-lingual family, thats right.. count them three languages, I heard English, Spanish and Chinese being spoken. I love that!

Baby Olivia made a grand wide awake entrance, but after a feeding from mom… my wish was her command. She was sooo good.

Well… back to digging out of the boxes. I’ll be at the St. Joseph’s Oktoberfest held at the Ellis County Expo center volunteering for my daughter’s school tomorrow. It’s going to be my first time to attend and volunteer. Stop by, buy a raffle ticket, make a bid on an auction item, eat some good food and drink. Then on Sunday – stop by my booth at the Bridal Show. Christi, my office manager (my boss), Mike, my second wedding shooter, and Hector my husband will all be in attendance. It takes a small village to keep me going! Have a great weekend!

Be Good!
