I’ve learned a few things about photographing newborns over the years.
1. When you want a baby to sleep they are not going to. And once you give up and call it a day guess what they do?? They sleep.
2. Every newborn sleeps all day until they come to the studio. The day they arrive is the day they “wake up”
3. If dad is present for the session, he WILL get soiled. Especially if he has to go back to work… guaranteed accident.
4. There are no bad newborn sessions. Sometimes I have to work harder… but the end result is always blissfully sweet.
5. Patience… let me say it again. PATIENCE. It is why I schedule 2 hours for a newborn and leave extra time around the session in case it goes over. I expect it to be hard. I expect a baby to cry, have accidents, not sleep.
The reward is always finding that one… the one that makes me want to photograph the next one. The one that makes my heart smile. The one that speaks to me and reminds me that on that day, I held a little miracle and it breathed, cried, and for an instant slept just long enough for me to take two pictures. And every single time – it is worth it.
Be Good!
